CURRENT GENETICS, 53(4) 207-216, Apr, 2008 Peer-reviewedThe mitochondrial genome of a filamentous brown alga Pylaiella littoralis (strain CCMP 1907) has been reported to contain four group IIB introns in the LSU rRNA gene and three group IIA introns in the cox1 gene. We found extreme variability in the number of group II introns for these two genes by analyzing eight P. littoralis specimens collected at worldwide habitats. The first intron of the LSU rRNA gene from a specimen collected in France and the fourth intron from a specimen harvested in Japan exhibited an exceptionally long evolutionary distance when compared with the cognate introns found in P. littoralis specimens. Moreover, these introns harbored an intact or nearly intact tripartite ORF, suggesting they are the result of a recent invasion of cognate introns. Based on the fact that many of the target sites were intronless, we propose that opportunity of intron infection is the bottleneck step of the group II intron cycle which consists of invasion, degeneration, and complete loss from the target site.

Memoirs of Osaka Kyoiku University. V, Curricula and methods of education and allied subjects, 55(1) 137-146, 2006A Draft International Implementation Scheme for United Nations Decade of Education for Sustainable Development 2005-2014 was published on October 2004 by the United Nations Education, Science and Culture Organization (UNESCO), and United Nations Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (2005-2014): Implementation Scheme by UNESCO followed on October 2005. Osaka Kyoiku University has supported a forest experience learning of elementary schools at Kashiwara city since 2002. The forest experience learning is related to the decade of education for sustainable development by clarifying the education for sustainable development presented in the "United Nations Decade of Education for Sustainable Development 2005-2014 Draft International Implementation Scheme".

Memoirs of Osaka Kyoiku University. V, Curricula and methods of education and allied subjects, 53(2) 15-26, 2005Nowadays, the depression of curiosity about science of young Japanese people markedly increases in Japan. The experiments in school, one of the way for making a sense for science curiosity, are very important. However, teachers in Japanese schools, especially graduated at literature courses, tend to hesitate for teaching the scientific experiments. This fact may enhance a depression of the scientific curiosity. The present study, therefore, reports on our first trial experimental lectures of science open for 4th grade students in the literature courses in our university.

Osaka Kyoiku University has supported forest work-study programs of elementary schools at Kashiwara city since 2002, as an activity of contribution for society. In order to perform this activity at the Periods for Integrated Study, Kashiwara city and Osaka Prefectural Central Office for Agriculture-Forestry Promotion and Nature Conservation, who had continued the activity at Kashiwara since 1993, requested Osaka Kyoiku University to support the activity. From the Osaka Prefectural point of view, this activity is a kind of "local Forest-making project in cooperation with education" proceeded at Kashiwara by Osaka Prefectural Central Office for Agriculture-Forestry Promotion and Nature Conservation in a project called "Let's produce rich-green Osaka" which is one of six projects in a "New Promotion Vision in Primary Industries related to Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries". For Osaka Kyoiku University, this activity also provides an opportunity-to nourish students with an ability and a character indispensable for practical teachers in a coming new age. In a case of cooperative promotion of activities by some organizations, the purpose of the activity for each organization does not always agree. As an example of the cooperative activity with different purposes for each organization, the activity to support forest work- study programs performed at the Creative Forest on Takao Mountain in Kashiwara is focused and analyzed. An importance for each organization to have clear purpose for the cooperative activity is pointed.
