60(1) 75-91, Sep, 2011Kamura Isota, a well-known Japanese novelist of the 1920s and 30s, was an enthusiastic follower of Chikazumi Jokan, a priest of the Otani sect of Shin-Buddhism. Kamura's works show the deep influence of Chikazumi's thought. Kamura wrote several letters to Chikazumi regarding the doctrines of Shin-Buddhism. Two letters were recently discovered in Kyudo-Kaikan, Chikazumi's missionary center in Hongo, Tokyo. They reveal Kamura's religious pursuits and are important documents in understanding his background as a writer.

Journal of religious studies, 85(2) 375-399, 2011The "Basic Act on Education" (amended in December 2006) and the "Course of Study" posted in academic year 2008 encouraged religious education in Japanese primary and secondary education to step into a new stage. This article analyzes religious education in National or State Schools, and then presents several problems to be solved. First of all, the contents of religious sentiment under discussion are to be examined in the broader perspectives of education of religious sentiment before and after World War II. The examination naturally shows that the cultivation of religious sentiment in Japanese National or State schools is hardly possible for theoretical, historical, and practical reasons. Japanese schools in fact adopt alternative education for the education of religious sentiment. This alternative education has much to do with religion in two points but goes beyond religious education. Finally, lectures on religion in social studies are discussed. The issue of lectures on religion is so closely connected with developing the sense of values in life that more intensive research on the relationship is to be expected.

Memoirs of Osaka Kyoiku University 1 Humanities, 59(1) 121-140, Sep, 2010There was a close relationship between the family of MIYAZAWA Kenji and CHIKAZUMI Jokan, a priest of the Otani sect of Shin-Buddhism. Twenty letters from the Miyazawas were found in the Kyudo-Kaikan, Chikazumi's missionary center. Two letters from Toshi, a younger sister of Kenji, were especially important since she confessed she could not follow the doctrine of Shin-Buddhism. When Kenji became a follower of The Lotus Sutra after abandoning the doctrine of Shin-Buddhism, it was Toshi who immediately followed and supported him without hesitation. These letters reveal an aspect that Toshi's mental void affected Kenji to some extent rather than the supposition Kenji led Toshi in confirming her faith.confession

Palliative Care Research, 1(1) 109-113, 2006We surveyed the involvement of hospice and palliative care staff in spiritual and life-and-death education at school. We sent a questionnaire to a total of 138 hospice and palliative care institutions, receiving 67 responses (response rate 49%). A variety of staff at 15 institutions (22%) practiced life-and-death education. Most often, they realized the necessity of such education when they observed children grieving from the death or dying of a family member. 6 institutions targeted their life-and-death education to primary schools, 8 to junior high schools, and 6 to senior high schools. The number of teaching sessions ranged from once to 97 times per year, with hours of class contact less than one hour in 2 institutions, and 1-3 hours in the other 12 institutions. Even those institutions not conducting school education almost all responded that school education on life and death by healthcare workers would be meaningful. Respondents concurred that children would be moved by both "life-and-death education" and "spiritual education." Further comments almost all noted the importance of life-and-death education, not only for children but also for adults. In this sense, the expertise and experiences of hospice and palliative care institutions will become valuable educational resources.

Memoirs of Osaka Kyoiku University. IV, Education, pshychology, special education and physical culture, 51(1) 37-49, Sep, 2002"Death education" in Japan has not yet laid the philosophical foundations. This article aims at investigating its basis and guiding its destination. "Death education" as well as "hospice care", stems from the dimension of spirituality. Education, however, has particular limitation of its own different from medical service. This difference in Japan amounts up to my suggestion that Japanese "death education" should be centered upon "death of the other." This standpont proves applicable to both "child-centered education" and the educational reformation under discussion.

Memoirs of Osaka Kyoiku University.

Memoirs of Osaka Kyoiku University.

Memoirs of Osaka Kyoiku University.
